Painter Pieter Gerardus Sjamaar (from The Hague) came to fame with his nightly markets and interiors in which the only light source is candlelight. The genre of the “night scene”, also called “nocturne”, corresponded to the fascination of the romantic collector for the mysterious forces of nature and was also very popular in the nineteenth century. Also painters like Petrus van Schendel, J.C. Vaarberg, H.G. ten Cate and Theodorus Abels practiced this genre. Musea: Haags Gemeentemuseum.
