Very beautiful smaller Russian icon ‘Joy of All Sufferers’. Hand-painted with egg tempera colour on a wooden panel with chalk background. Typical method of icon production in the 18th and 19th centuries. Relatively simple depiction of saints.
OF NOTE: The icon is dated 23 July 1883. From the text, it can be gathered that the icon was created in St Petersburg (I cannot decipher the rest of the text). Russian icons usually should not be dated or signed by the painters. Therefore, the icon here deviates from well-defined and universally recognised rules. The icon is in good condition with typical age-related signs of wear and tear in the form of smaller paint chips, patina and dirt (see photos).
All details are well-visible in the photos. The pictures are part of the description.
