The 25th edition in 1994 became one of the most original, memorable and unusual editions in history when German Silva, a Mexican runner, made a wrong turn in Central Park by mistakenly following a television truck. Until then Silva was leading the race running alongside Benjamin Paredes, his compatriot and training partner. Due to the mistake, after taking about fifteen steps in the wrong direction, Silva noticed it and returned in the right direction, returning to the race but with a disadvantage of about 60 metres.

It is at this point that something extraordinary happened, again. Silva accelerated for 400 metres, unlike a marathoner. Silva approached Paredes around the 26th mile, near the finish he accelerated again to overtake Paredes who, surrendering, also patted him on the back as he headed to win the marathon. Silva won by two seconds in 2h 11' and 21''. The smallest gap between first and second in the history of the New York Marathon.
