Ushabti for Tius
Late Period 27th - 30th Dynasty, 525 – 341 BC
SIZE: Height 19,5 cm
PROVENANCE: Private collection, Europe, acquired in 1970s.
CONDITION: In a good state of preservation, restored at the level of the nose and the lower part of the legs.
This ushabti figurine is depicted as a worker holding two hoes for work in the fields of Osiris in the afterlife. He is wearing a tripartite wig which falls down between the shoulders. He has a Osiris-type beard which ends in a tight forward curl. Only the hands, crossed over the chest and holding the already-mentioned agricultural implements, emerge from the mummiform shroud covering the entire body.
On his body can be seen 9 lines of horitzontal hieroglyphic text, that join up with a panel without inscription on the back of the figure. The figure is mounted on a small plinth.
The text translated says: “Illuminate the Osiris of Tius whose word is truth. Born of Tayderek, whose word is truth. He says: Oh!These Ushabtis. If I am called. The Osiris of Tius, to do the work that is required in the Afterlife, her I am! You will say, to remove all obstacles, to cultivate the fields, to water the riverside fields and to transport sand from the East to the West. Iam here! Say what you wish!”.
Ushabti were made from one original bi-valve mold. Once the two pieces were joined and the rough edges removed, and while the material was still moist, the details of the image were retouched and the columns were marked on which the hieroglyphs would be incised. This meant that each ushabti was unique, even though they had come from the same mold.
