Daniel Rudge (1840-26 June 1880) was a British engineer who built high-quality bicycles and velocipedes. Rudge invented the bicycle hub with adjustable ball bearing (British patent no. 526) in 1878.
The French cyclist Charles Terront, who won the first Paris-Brest-Paris race in 1891, used the Rudge axles with great success, bringing worldwide attention to the company products. In the years before John Dunlop invented the tyre, Rudge dealt with this issue by producing a four-bladed spring suspension fork in 1887.
After Rudge's death, his company was merged with The Tangent & Coventry Tricycle Company to form D. Rudge & Co. which in 1894 became Rudge Whitworth Cycles. In 1911, the Rudge Whitworth Cycle Company started to manufacture motorcycles.
